Upgrading from StorMan Standalone to StorMan MultiUser (#HWSSAMUUPG01)

Introduction

As your business grows and becomes busier, the need may arise to upgrade from a Standalone copy of StorMan, to our MultiUser product (compare products here). As StorMan MultiUser is an add-on product, be sure to only attempt this upgrade after purchasing it, otherwise you will still only be able to open your copy of StorMan with 1 computer.

These instructions are intended for IT technicians. Alternatively, we can have one of our support technicians conduct the transfer on your behalf; please contact StorMan Support to book in the upgrade.

 

What about the Operating System?

StorMan's MultiUser product can run on a Mac or Windows PC. In fact, you can even run a network of both Mac & Windows machines within the same MultiUser environment. Before upgrading, we recommend checking your computers against our list of supported operating systems (#HWSSOS01) & our list of recommended computer hardware (#HWSHSR01).

 

Upgrading StorMan Standalone to StorMan MultiUser

  1. Begin by ensuring that all computers are networked & that they can see one another on the network. Note: StorMan MultiUser requires an always-on network connection; even the slightest drop-out due to bad network cabling or an intermittent wireless signal will cause the affected client to drop-out & require reconnection. As such we DO NOT recommend using wireless for a StorMan MultiUser network.
  2. Exit your existing copy of StorMan Standalone.
  3. Navigate to the StorMan Database folder (usually c:\Program Files\StorMan\Database\ or similar) and copy the contents onto a USB stick or external hard drive.
  4. Uninstall StorMan Standalone (and remove any desktop and/or menu shortcuts) on the computer that used to run it. Failing to do so may cause confusion if staff unknowingly open the old instance of the software & begin working with, or adding-to, out-of-data data. You can perform this step right at the end, if you prefer.
  5. On the server computer, download & install the StorMan Server program. Please contact StorMan Support for the URL for this program, as the version will need to be the same as your current version - otherwise an upgrade conflict will occur.
  6. Once installed, copy your company database files (the ones from Step 3) into the new StorMan Server Database folder (usually c:\Program Files\StorMan Server\Server Database\ or similar).
  7. Start StorMan Server program with the ALT key held down on your keyboard (you will need to hold down the ALT key immediately after launching the program). A prompt will appear, asking you where your datafile is located. Navigate to your Database folder (usually c:\Program Files\StorMan Server\Server Database\ or similar) & select your company database file to open it.
  8. Next, install the StorMan Client program on your client machines; you can also install this program on the StorMan Server computer as well, if you like. Please contact StorMan Support for the URL for this program, as the version will need to be the same as your current Server version - otherwise a conflict will occur.
  9. Once installed, start the StorMan Client program on one (or all) of the other computers. Upon launching this program, you should be presented with a window similar to the one below... StorMan Client - Selecting the database to connect to
  10. Click the TCP/IP tab and select your Server computer from this list.Note: If your server doesn't appear on this tab after a few seconds, please ensure that your StorMan Server program is actually up & running, that your network is functioning correctly & that the client & server machines can see each other on the network. If all else fails, please contact StorMan Support.
  11. Click OK to open your database using StorMan Client.
  12. Finally, setup the backups on your StorMan Server program. As always - if in doubt, please contact StorMan Support.
