Introduction

The need may arise to move (or transfer) StorMan from one computer to another; generally if you're upgrading computers, or a computer has ceased to function and you are replacing it. These instructions are intended for IT technicians. Alternatively, we can have one of our support technicians conduct the transfer on your behalf; please contact StorMan Support for a quotation.

What about the Operating System?

If the new computer runs a different operating system to the older computer, we recommend checking it against our list of supported operating systems, via #HWSSOS01.

Transferring StorMan Professional (standalone) to another computer

  1. Close StorMan on the old computer (if it is running). Navigate to the StorMan installation folder (usually c:\Program Files\StorMan\ or similar) and copy the entire Database folder to a USB stick or external hard drive.
  2. On the new computer, install the same version of StorMan as was on the old computer. If you're not sure what StorMan version the old computer was running, please contact StorMan Support. You can also obtain the download link from StorMan Support. Note: Do NOT download the trial / demo from our website & install it on the new computer, as it will be a different version to the one that was running on the old computer. Database upgrades require manual intervention; opening an older database in a newer version of StorMan will likely damage it.
  3. Once successfully installed, paste the Database folder from the old computer (in Step 1) on top of the Database folder in the StorMan installation folder on the new computer; effectively replacing it. Select Yes if prompted to overwrite files.
  4. Start StorMan on the new computer, with the ALT key held down on your keyboard (you will need to hold down the ALT key immediately after launching the program). A "Browse"-style dialog box should appear.Note: If this dialog does not appear, you probably weren't fast enough with the 'ALT' key; you will need to quit and try it again.
  5. Using the dialog, navigate to the Database folder on the new computer (i.e.: where you placed the files from Step 3) and select the facility.4DD file to open (where facility = the name of the facility you are at). Ensure the database opens correctly and ask the client to check that their data appears as normal.
  6. Uninstall StorMan (and remove any desktop and/or menu shortcuts) on the old computer. Failing to do so may cause confusion if staff unknowingly open the old instance of the software & begin working with, or adding-to, out-of-data data.

Transferring StorMan MultiUser (the StorMan Server application) to another computer

  1. Close all instances of StorMan Client running on the network.
  2. Close StorMan Server on the old computer (if it is running). Navigate to the StorMan Server installation folder (usually c:\Program Files\StorMan Server\ or similar) and copy the entire Server Database folder to a USB stick or external hard drive.
  3. On the new server computer, install the same version of StorMan Server as was on the old computer. If you're not sure what StorMan Server version the old computer was running, please contact StorMan Support. You can also obtain the download link from StorMan Support. Note: Do NOT download the trial / demo from our website & install it on the new computer, as it will be a different version to the one that was running on the old computer. Database upgrades require manual intervention; opening an older database in a newer version of StorMan will likely damage it.
  4. Once successfully installed, paste the Server Database folder from the old server computer (in Step 2) on top of the Server Database folder in the StorMan installation folder on the new computer; effectively replacing it. Select Yes if prompted to overwrite files.
  5. Start StorMan Server on the new server computer, with the ALT key held down on your keyboard (you will need to hold down the ALT key immediately after launching the program). A "Browse"-style dialog box should appear.Note: If this dialog does not appear, you probably weren't fast enough with the 'ALT' key; you will need to try it again.
  6. Navigate to the Server Database folder on the new server computer (i.e.: where you placed the files from Step 4) and select the facility.4DD file to open (where facility = the name of the facility you are at).
  7. Start the StorMan Client program on one of the other computers with the ALT key held down on your keyboard (you will need to hold down the ALT key immediately after launching the program). Note: If this dialog does not appear, you probably weren't fast enough with the 'ALT' key; you will need to try it again.
  8. You should then be presented with a window similar to the one below... StorMan Client - Selecting the database to connect to
  9. After a few moments, the TCP/IP tab (shown below) should populate with the names of any StorMan Server computers running on your network (in our case, this is 'SMServer'). Select the server from the list, and click OK to connect to it. The connection should then be re-established. Repeat this on other StorMan Client computers experiencing the same issue.
  10. Ensure the database opens correctly and ask the client to check that their data appears as normal.
  11. Uninstall StorMan Server (and remove any desktop and/or menu shortcuts) on the old computer. Failing to do so may cause confusion if staff unknowingly open the old instance of the software & begin working with, or adding-to, out-of-data data.
