  • RealVNC is third-party software and is not supported by StorMan. We provide this article merely to offer some initial assistance. Please consult your IT technician for further assistance and clarification if required.

Before you begin

Before you can log into a computer running RealVNC, you will need to ensure that...

  • The computer you are connecting to has RealVNC installed (see: #HWSVCI01 - Installing RealVNC)
  • RealVNC is allowed through the firewall running on the network and / or computer you are connecting to.
  • The computer you are connecting to is running the 'VNC Server' program (identified with a green-coloured 'V' on the icon)
  • You know the live IP address of the computer you are connecting to. To find out, as your IT technician, internet service provider or visit www.whatismyip.com (on the machine you are connecting to) to find your current live IP. Note that some IP's change daily & some remain the same; it depends on the setup at your internet service provider.

Logging into a computer running RealVNC

  1. On the computer that you are connecting from, start the Listening VNC Viewer program (identified with a red-coloured 'V' on the icon). The program will likely appear on the end of your Windows taskbar (in the System Tray area) near your Windows Clock (again, identified with a red-coloured 'V' on the icon). Double-click it to launch the viewer window.
  2. A dialog box should appear, asking you for the address of the machine (running VNC Server) that you wish to view. Enter the IP address for this computer. Click OK to connect.
  3. The computer you are connecting to will likely have a password set for incoming VNC connections, so enter this when prompted and click the button to confirm. You should now be able to control the remote computer.

I don't seem to be able to connect - why?

There could be a number of factors including but not limited to the following...

  • The remote computer is not switched on
  • The remote computer may not be running the RealVNC Server application
  • Internet connectivity at the remote site may not be available
  • A firewall or network protection device may be protecting the machine from inbound VNC connections
  • Check the port number that VNC is operating under (the default is 5900)
  • Software (eg: Norton Internet Security, etc) running on the remote computer may be preventing the establishment of a connection
  • The IP address of the remote computer is wrong, or may have changed recently
  • RealVNC may be listening on a different or unusual port

In any case, please contact your IT technician for further assistance as VNC (and any accompanying connectivity issues) are not supported by StorMan.
